Xuan Ye

Xuan Ye (CN/CA) is the prototype of many objects. X’s work synthesizes language, code, sound, body, image, data, light, and time often through processes of diagrammatic and multimedial translations. X researches and works with non-human agency to transform complex systems and interconnected networks into aesthetic experiences.

X’s installations have been exhibited and featured in international contexts including Elephant (Montreal, CA), Vivid Projects (Birmingham, UK), Supermarket Art Fair (Stockholm, SE), InterAccess (Toronto, CA), Inside-out Art Museum (Beijing, CN), Goethe-Institut (Beijing & Montreal), ArtAsiaPacific, KUNSTFORUM International (GE), Trinity Square Video (Toronto, CA), AGYU(Toronto, CA), the Wrong Biennale (URL), Times Museum (Guangzhou, CN), among others. X is a finalist of EQ Bank Digital Artists Award and a recipient of SSHRC scholarship. X’s live sound and body improvisation has been lauded as “one of Canada’s most exciting voices in textural soma” by OBEY Convention. X has made appearances at Music Gallery (CA), Squeaky Wheel Film & Media Art Center (US), Suoni Per Il Popolo (CA), OBEY Convention (CA), Kazoo! Fest (CA), Electric Eclectics Festival (CA), Downtown Music Gallery(US), 21C Festival in partnership w/ MOCCA (CA), Zoomin' Night (CN), Le Festival Croisements (CN), etc. X’s performances and releases have also received critical accolades from Bandcamp, Musicworks and Exclaim!

"The G=A=R=D=E=N series incorporates interactive poetry, computer imagined organisms, with repurposed obsolete technology and e-waste. This project continues X’s research in human and machine coupling by zooming out from individual bodies to the scale of “city” as a collective body/network of residents and non-human agency, and how the “habitat” is conditioned by cyber-capitalism that are interconnected with climate crisis, political economy and technoscientific development. What Nebula, What Hyperbolic Light, What Flora and Fauna

What Nebula, What Hyperbolic Light, What Flora and Fauna (WNWHLWFF) is the second work of an ongoing project G=A=R=D=E=N. Through multimedia installations and performances, the series speculates on the idea of “habitat” in the context of technological acceleration and urban sprawl. It uses “garden” as a metaphor for re-imagining an ideal habitat where human, natural and man-made materials coexist. WNWHLWFF is a 3D animation essay about dwelling in such accelerated future of landscapes, where silicon and carbon-based matters are hybrided, e-waste became organisms, and abandoned motherboards are enlarged into construction sites, oil rigs and building blocks. The slow camera panning enables the imposed rhythms of existing to be bent for a pause or a reflection.
